Each year we try and bring you workshops that enliven the soul and enrich our daily lives. We hope to fulfill that goal again this year.

Drum Making with Phil

Prices range from $95.00 for 10” Deer hide to $200.00 for 24” Elk hide hoop drums. Contact Phil (303) 838-3018 for more information on hoop or octagonal frames sizes and Deer and Elk hides. Individual classes can be arranged almost anytime throughout the Festival on a case-by-case basis - depending on availability of materials. Pre-made Drums will be available in Merchant Row. All ages.

THURS  10:00 AM COMMUNITY CENTER Welcome to Dragonfest. Presented by Phil Catalano who has been attending Dragonfest since 1989 - he has been on staff every year since 1990 in a variety of staff positions. This is both a welcoming for new Dragonfest attendees & a refresher for all attendees.  We will discuss all facets of the Festival – Medical, Security, Community Center, Drum Circles, etc… what to expect through out the event, it’s history, the organizational structure, current events and activities. It will also include a “Dragonfest Ethics” discussion & handout, “Circle Etiquette”, Drum Circle etiquette and related Do’s & Don’ts – including Safety & Security around the Fire ring. We  review rituals, including what to expect, and what is expected of the participants. Discussions will also include workshops, timing of events & activities.   We will review the Map and locations of where events & workshops also where Medical, camping locations, clothing optional/required areas, hiking trails, quite areas & swimming locations. We will also discuss the work shifts, staff functions and leadership rolls – Della as Campground Manager, etc. All ages

Stumbling Down the Path: An Intro to Taoism.  Presented by Jim who is a fourth-order "Ben Dan" and has been studying Taoism for over fifteen  years.  He is frequently found at parties, telling silly stories.  This is an introductory workshop that will explore Taoism with a combination of stories, exercises, meditations and jokes.  It will examine the history and evolution of Taoism years ago in China and look a "the Way" fro historical, magical and religious perspectives, and investigate teaching of the unteachable from immortality to Tai Chi to Taoist Mind Control by the way of the Tao Te Ching, Chuang Tzu and Winnie the Poo.  Oh, did we mention sex?

Cherokee Dance of Life. In this workshop you will learn a simple ritual intended to connect the practitioner with the wisdom an spiritual teachings of the Cherokee People. Josh will invite attendees to participate in the dance each morning following the workshop if they would like at a location to be announced.

Drumming 101 w/ Tony Kisling. Tony Kisling has been drumming for about 10 years and bought his first drum at Dragonfest in 97!!!! Beginner drumming for everyone!! Bring your drum and any percussion toys you might have! (Some extra drums are available). All Ages are welcome. Kids are encouraged to bring a parent.

What Makes you Angry? What makes your Frustrated?  What is beneath you anger, what fears are driving and fueling that anger?  Thing about how you take your anger into the world.  Do you express it?  If you do, do you express it in a way that is good for you and those around you, or harmful?  What do you hold inside that needs harmless, healing outlet? This ritual/workshop explores these issues, and provides energy work and magical avenues for transforming negative emotion into positive change.

Adult language and topics maybe expressed.  Teenagers welcome if accompanied by parent or guardian

We are Sacred Voice Circle. We gather together once a month to share songs and chants. There is no requirement to sing well, just the love of song, and the wanting to connect with Deity is all that is required. Come to the workshop to learn new chants, or reconnect with some old ones.  This workshop will be right before Flower Frenzy and will end early enough for presenters to attend the ritual.

This year the Centering team will be offeringworkshops at the Centering Tent twice a day.  There will be a morning and afternoon session.  We will go over a variety of grounding and centering techniques such as: Guided Meditation, Essential Oils, Stones and Crystals, Sound Meditations, Pranayama (yogic breathing) and Vipassana (mindfulness).

Partnering with Ra for fun and Savings: with Erika 'Sparky" Valentine:  Solar and Green energy discussion.  The first pat of the class covers basic electricity as well as why and how solar and other P-N junction devices work. There will also be an overview of standard and emerging technologies in energy storage and power inverters. (approx. 1 hour)  The second part is a round table discussion on ways to reduce energy consumption and save money. (remainder)  Hands on demonstrations and possibly a short video.

An' it Harm None A Discussion of healthy physical expression of affection.  Open to adults, we will discuss perceptions, communication and respect required to have a healthy and loving physical expressions of affection in our community.  This will be a judgment free zone all ideas are welcome

Non-Christian/GLBT issues in State run Foster Adoptions This workshop will focus on what it takes to become a foster/adopt parent.  What are the specific issues that pagan and GLBT families face and how it is not as bad as you might have heard.  This workshop is a safe non-official open forum so you will get all the information you might never otherwise hear.  All are Welcome

Shaman Hoop Drum making workshop w/ Phil Catalano. Phil has been taught by 2 different teachers, has made more than 20 Drums, and has been teaching classes for 7 years. This workshop will concentrate on a particular design made popular with the availability of pre-made hoops and the availability of skins and hides.  The techniques are taken from the traditional methods and updated for the use of more contemporary hoops and preparation methods.  Prices range from $95.00 for 10” Deer hide to $200.00 for 24” Elk hide hoop drums.  Contact Phil (303) 838-3018 for more information on hoop or octagonal frames sizes and Deer and Elk hides.   Individual classes can be arranged almost anytime throughout the Festival on a case-by-case basis - depending on availability of materials. Mandala's The Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning circle or center.  Traditionally a Mandala's consisted of a circle depicting the cosmos, and a square resembling the earth or man-made world - reflecting a universe in which  all was in balance.  Want to learn more about Mandala's and how they can help you change your life?  Come to this great workshop.  You will learn a lot of new information and, of course, there will be a lot of time to color with various mediums.  Presented by Nancy Steer.

Polyamory 201 Are you in a polyamorous relationship?  Perhaps you're curious about Polyamory and want to  meet others enjoying a poly lifestyle?  This workshop will be hosted by Tres and Star, who have been a practicing polyamorous couple for over 5 years.  It will be a facilitated discussion about common and not so common issues of being polyamorous.  This will be geared towards those already in a polyamorous relationship, although it is open to anyone.  What about Polyamory 101?  Sadly, Jim Boegman was unable to attend Dragonfest this year.  Hopefully he will return next year and again host his Polyamory 101 workshop.

DOMA and the UAFA This workshop is an open discussion forum about DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) and UAFA (Uniting American Families Act).  Inger is one half of a Bi-National couple who is separated from her wife Philippa because she cannot sponsor her  into America because they are a same sex couple.  Silver is a good friend of both presenting in place of Philippa who was not able to attend festival.  You will here their story and how DOMA and the UAFA affect or does not affect everyone and will go over ways of how anyone can help bring equality by lending their voices to GLBT Equality and Rights.  Please come share you stories, learn how to get involved, help bring equality to same sex couples and united families separated by discriminatory laws.

Stitch n Bitch w/Varina: Varina is a self taught left handed crochet enthusiast.  Are you a yarn harlot?  Do you current crafty projects take up more space in  your closet than your clothing?  Well come sit a spell and bring the project you packed up for Fest.  This is a round table discussion for sharing your favorite crafty ideas and opinions on yarn, fabric, floss, etc.  Newbie's welcomed and encouraged.

Happy Henna; Henna Body Art  Back by popular demand is Lorry Pearson of Happy Henna.  This class will include information about Henna, where it grows, history, spirituality, using Henna in ritual, how it works, how to make your own, creating transfers and application on the skin and after care.  THEN, it will be playtime with Henna.  The class is FREE, but if there is and OPTIONAL FEE of $10.00 which will get you a kit that includes: a magic transfer pencil, cone of fresh henna paste, transfer paper, clean up tools, transfer gel, Lorry's famous Henna recipe, designs and Lorry's email for any question you might have.  FRESH SUPPLIES ARE AVAILABLE AT CLASS.  This is a class you will never forget.

Druid Roundtable w The Treehenge seed group.  Facilitated by members of the Treehenge Seed group of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids - all ages- Whether you are on the Druid's path already or just curious about Druidry, please join us in an informal discussion of the subject.  Many knowledgeable bards will be on hand to share the facts and  philosophy.  Please bring questions and please bring answers.  Ritual will follow

Tao in the Morning: 21st Century Scholar Warrior This is presented by Jim who is a fourth-order "Ben Dan" who has been studying Taoism for over fifteen years.  He is frequently found at parties, telling silly stories.  This workshop focuses on integrating the 3000 year old Taoist traditions into a 21st century lifestyle.  We'll discuss philosophy, draw with crayons, write poems, and explore the Doctrine of Discretionary Energy.  We'll look at the work by Lao Tzu, Aleister Crowley and modern day Taoists: and we will inhale clouds.  Oh did we mention sex?  (PREREQUISITE: A basic understanding of Taoism i.e. "Stumbling Down the Path" on Thursday 10 am is good, but NOT critical)

Dream Pillows Dream pillows have been around for many  years, it was common place for our grandmothers to stitch up a headache pillow to erase the pain of headaches or have a dream pillow on every bed filled with natures bountiful herbs and flowers.  Join Lori in creating your own dream pillow.  This is a pre-registered class limited to the 1st 15 people and there is a $5.00 fee for supplies.  You can contact Lori with any questions about this workshop at questaree@yahoo.com

Drawing the What? w/ Joseph Davalt. This workshop is for anyone who has never attended or would like to know more about the sacred rite we call Drawing Down. We will be covering some basic history of this blessed event as it has been witnessed throughout the ages, including some of the more unfortunate things our modern day society has done to it. We will also be talking openly about the concept of Drawing Down and what to expect if you decide to attend the Drawing Down of the Moon ritual. So bring your questions, skepticism and a dash of irreverence as we explore this most cherished and beautiful rite. All ages

Opening the Joy of Into-Me-See This workshop is presented by Suzann Robins.  Suzann is a college professor who has trained many years ago with Margo Adler, Starhawk and Z. Budapest.  She currently lives in Denver where she has a counseling/coaching practice specializing in relationships.  This is an experiential, interactive workshop addressing how energy in motion (e-motions) determine the way we relate and react to others.  Healthy relationships can be measured by opening to the joy of self-love.    This workshop will introduce an easy exercise using rainbow colors to create a spaciousness in the body to allow for more pleasure and sense of well being.

Songwriter's Circle This workshop is presented by Taliesin the Green who is an active musician on a variety of instruments and producer of the Songwriter's Showcase in Lawrence, Kansas.  SONGWRITER'S UNITE!!  Come share an original song or two and receive supportive and honest feedback from the group.  All levels welcome.  (PREREQUISITE: There will be no apologizing for perceived lack of abilities  We will celebrate who you are)

Magick This workshop is presented by Phil who has been a student of Ancient, Historical and Occult Knowledge for 30 years, has  studied with several Occult Mystery Schools and holds a BS Degree in Parapsychology.  He practices magick in his daily life.  "Magick" is defined as "causing change in accordance with one's will".  This workshop will discuss the History, Theory and Practice of Occult Magick, several methods of spell working, description of tools and how to use them , and a discussion of consequences both positive and negative..plus lots more!!

Chanting and Drumming with Sa'ra Rain and Iannin Here we are again with our dueling passion for drumming and chanting, putting it all together into a harmonious collection of devotional rhythm!  Sa'ra will teach and lead chanting stuff..Iannin will teach and lead drumming stuff..they love singing and drumming together with all you happy Pagans!  Bring a drum, bring a rattle, bring some water (for to drink), bring something to sit on, bring your vibrating vocal cords, bring notebooks or recording devices if you like, bring a buddy (or yourself), bring your children (or someone else's) and bring Spirit! Basic Practical Self Defense w/Josh This workshop is presented by Josh who is a former martial arts instructor of 3 years.  A black belt of HCMA Jeet Kun Do System. Blue Belt and current student of Machado Brazilians Jiu-Jitsu.  Come learn simple effective self defense techniqu4s for the average peace loving non-confrontational pagan types.  This will look at several of the most common situation in which you are not the aggressor.  The information in this workshop is drawn from the Jeet Kun DO and Brazilians Jiu-Jitsu Systems.

Gemstones -Spiritual, Mystical and Healing w/Phil: Phil has been a "rock hound" for 30+ years and h as a lapidary hobby-cutting and polishing semi-precious gemstones for more than 25  years.  He also uses gemstones Magically and Spiritually.   A historical and contemporary review of semi-precious gemstones, i.e. Jaspers, Agates, and mineral specimens.  Included in the workshop will be the mystical and spiritual attributes, the healing powers, and the lore and sacred uses of these gemstones, including spell working.  Gemstones have been used throughout history as sacred objects, talismans, and amulets, and especially known for the curative powers.  A brief review of their physical, chemical and scientific properties will also be discussed.  There will be 10-15 books available to look at, a specimen board with samples to see and a handout about Gemstones with a free Agate or Jasper.

Love, Religion and the Goddess Athena This workshop is presented by Robin and Mary.  Robin Vinehall is a Third Degree Wiccan High Priest who has been HP of several more-or-less traditional covens and is one of the founders of Dragonfest.  Mary Reeves is an initiate of Qabala and a Second Degree Wiccan High Priestess.  ~A major change took place in many religions between 900 BCE and 300 BCE.  The goddess Athena can be said to preside over this change in Greek paganism, refocusing religion from power to love and compassion.  Is this change reflected in modern Paganism?  If so, how and where?  Are more changes needed, and if so, what should they be?

Ogham-the Ancient Irish Alphabet Ogham, the ancient Irish tree alphabet, derives its name from the Irish deity Ogham, the god of eloquence, poetry and learning.  More than just an alphabet, the oghams are used for divination, inscribed on stone pillars and are the basis of the Celtic Tree Calendar.  This workshop will cover the origins of the Ogham system and their modern use in divinations 9colbrani), talismans and in celebrating the Wheel of the Year.

This is a discussion group for teens on how to come out or if you should come out to friends and family about the craft.  Issues on how to answer questions about your beliefs and how to represent them in a positive way.

Sex Ed Forum for Parents of GLBTQ Children. Ever wished someone had told your parents just the right words to send you on your way?  We all got the birds and bees info, but what if you’re a bee looking for another stinger?  Or a bird looking for another tail feather?  Then what would Mom and Dad have to say?  If you are a Mom or Dad, do you feel you are ready to handle the questions and concerns of your GLBTQ child(ren)?  Well here's a chance to get some help.  Lets' get together for and hour and discuss.  Feel free to come and ask what concerns or curiosities you have about the GLBTQ community.  Whether it be for yourself or for your kids.  Even if you have a basics on what goes where...., do you know about the culture and situations that many face?  GLBTQ be there to share your thoughts and camaraderie.

Spiritual Art Healing and Growth, Using the Archetype Hero's/Heroine's Journey with Tarot This workshop will focus on the Fool Tarot Card.  The class will include Art, Guided Visualization and The Fool Tarot Card during the creative art time.  If students wish to do so they will be able to show and tell at the end of class.  Art supplies will be provided.  Spiritual Healing Art is about the "Journey" not the final destination.
